The Situation
As one of the GE Grid Solutions' longest serving channel partner, we provide GE relay solutions; an electromagnetic switch for protection control to many critical industries. Our recent collaboration in a project for one of the Petronas plant, saw our skillful expertise in successfully retrofitting 132kV and upgrading a 33kV Busbar Protection System respectively, for a total of 45 bays.
The Challenge
The existing mechanical type busbar protection system required an upgrade to adequately meet performance challenges and demands. An upgrade to a numerical type busbar protection system using GE Micom P741 and P742 was proposed with the existing topology being maintained. However, since the current panel was a relatively old panel; Alstom MBCZ relay, our task included building a mock up panel for Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) purposes, in order to test the busbar scheme before the actual on-site installation.
The Strategy and Outcome
Our first initiative was to conduct a thorough and detailed study on the wiring. Our vast experience and skills led to a quick and accurate mapping of a new busbar topology. A mock up panel was then promptly built with precision and control. It then endured numerous stringent tests for approval before further experimenting it with the new busbar protection system.

Upon acceptance of FATs, we installed both the GE Micom P741 and P742 and conducted primary stability and secondary test during commissioning. Any limitations were rectified and updated in our drawings. In our handover, we had updated all the as-build drawing and conducted a comprehensive training on our product and handling methods. Our engineers and technicians worked around-the-clock to provide first-hand technical support, troubleshooting services and consultation. The project was successfully commissioned after four (4) months upon award; where installation took just less than one (1) month to complete - a milestone of achievement for such an enormous project. Such feat was only achievable through our solid partnership with GE and an outstanding teamwork by our people unanimously dedicated to excellence.
